Henry's Fork Snake River Diversion

Waders have more uses then just fishing. Darren and I strapped on the waders this day. It was a great day of photographing(do you have a date Darren?). Except I about got stuck in 2 feet of silt/mud and a foot of water, camera gear in hand. Sedimentation is one of the causes for low fish numbers in this section of the river. It is a result of runoff from farming in the area. I thought Darren had an image or two on his website from this day. I guess I was wrong. Anyways. Oh, by the way, who can find Darren in one of these two photographs? Also, lets have a little vote. Which do you like most? I or II?

I vote for number I. The rocks in the foreground are more interesting to me. I always enjoys the visual 'contrast' of solid objects surrounded by the flowing water. Is Darren off at the extreme left edge of this image?

You win the prize. (to be announced at a later date.) Thanks for the comments. It is nice when people say more then just "I like it". Of course thats your job, right?

I actually vote for number 2. But my reason is extremely unsophisticated: I like the color balance.

The colors in both should be closer then they are. So that isn't a total deciding factor. By the way, color balance is not unsophisticated. It is a formal element as well and carries equal weight. Don't talk down to yourself so much. If you like the color, expand on why you do. Don't think your opinion doesn't count. You have looked at enough photographs to talk about them intelligently.

Ok. It's not so much that I feel the color is an actual representation of what was there, or that I feel there is perfect color balance. What I really like, is the way that the color in the foreground water helps me feel the water's motion. The top image is very dignified and beautiful, but very sedate. The bottom image gives me a sensation of the churning of the water, and (darst I be frooffy?) a feeling of being unsettled myself.
Hope I didn't go overboard, now.

You froof ball. No, you didn't go overboard. Evaluating images onscreen is not the easiest thing in the world.

I do agree wit your evaluation of the top image. It is quite sedate. There is not the same fluidity that exists in the second image. I like the rocks in the forground of the top one but I like the movement in the second one.

Also, the top one has a defined right to left movement to the image. The second one breaks that up a bit with the water flowing at you and also to the right a touch. A majority of the water is flowing right to left but there is enough going left to right to help balance.

Hard to say, thats why it is nice to hear feedback from others.

Anybody else wish to speak up?

By the way, the yellow in the middle of the bottom one is driving me crazy. I would try to get rid of that in a print. Or at least downplay it a touch.

I'm having a hard time choosing, but I think #1. I like the composition that the 'line' of the waterfall makes. What I really like about #2 is the foreground texture of the water. Nice work -

Thanks James, Kristi, Brian and Darren for the feedback. Oh wait, I take that back. All Darren gave was a wise crack. Anyway, thanks.

Huh. I like both for different reasons. I like the smoothness of the water below the falls, the rocks, and the spray coming off the twig/branch/whatever in the first photo. I also like the falls themselves. BUT I also like the movement of the water in the second one. I don't see the yellow you're referring to.

Oh. There's Darren.... Duh.
